Trip Origins

On January 24, I start my trip by flying south . . . weather permitting. Those who tried to get home to Ketchikan after Christmas and finally made it after 13 landings in almost every other Alaskan town, know only too well.

First my acknowledgments:
This wouldn't have happened without a persistent person in the school district asking me if I was going to do a blog while on my trip. And another patient person who showed me how to set it up. The hardest part of setting this up was picking a title for my travelogue. There were other catchier-sounding choices; however, there are reasons why I ended up with this one.

How did this trip come about?
An invitation from a college acquaintance who had kept in touch off and on over the years. This person, (I'll call him PC for now), has a doctorate in zoology and is an expert on penguins and seals. He is the expedition leader on a cruise ship traveling the coast of Chile and Argentina and down to Antarctica.
He called asking if I'd like to be a "volunteer" on such a cruise. The only job . . . helping passengers on and off Zodiacs on the shore stops in Antarctica. (Sorry, no more volunteers are needed.)
After the cruise ends in Ushuia, Argentina, I will be staying on the ship for 7 days into another cruise until I disembark in Stanley on the Falkland Islands. Four days there, and I fly back to Chile and back to Santiago for 7 days.
